Most interesting Redskin? 10 things to know about David Bruton
Most interesting Redskin?
Strong safety David Bruton was just signed by the Redskins in March and hasn't played a regular season down yet. Fans probably don't know much about him except that he won a Super Bowl ring with the Broncos last season and visited the White House this spring for the team ceremony with the President. He also famously broke his tibia in a December, 2015 game against the Steelers and continued playing through the fourth quarter. He was placed on IR two days later.
Bruton is a compelling player on the field, but may be a more interesting person off it. Here are 10 things to know about your next favorite Redskin.
1) He's a doting father
The first thing you'll notice about Bruton's social media is the number of posts about his son, Jaden. The 10-year-old was born during his freshman season at Notre Dame, according to the ND Observer. Jaden accompanies his father everywhere, like NBA Finals games and the ESPYs, but school always comes first. In fact, Bruton often takes his son to do homework at Starbucks like a "college student."
2) He's an avid reader and education advocate
Besides football, Bruton's life's work has been all about reading. His Bruton's Books program, which earned him the Broncos' 2015 Walter Payton Man of the Year Award, aims to foster a love of reading in low-income students by providing tutoring and donating books to underfunded schools. He hopes to become a teacher after retiring from football and actually substitute taught during the NFL lockout in 2011. The safety also spends a lot of time reading himself. He started a new book during Redskins training camp.
3) He's a proud Notre Dame alum
Bruton played football at Notre Dame and graduated with a bachelor's degree in political science and sociology. This past April, he was invited back to campus to serve as an honorary captain for the annual Blue and Gold game. He brought his son, of course, because it's never too early to start setting expectations.
4) He's a serious bike rider
It's hard to tell which Bruton loves more: books or bicycles. The man does everything from trail riding to road cycling and even has a tattoo of a bicycle on his calf. Trek bikes seem to be his favorites. Bruton also has found a way to combine reading and cycling by organizing a charity ride to benefit Bruton's Books.
5) He's a daredevil outdoorsman
In addition to football and cycling, Bruton also has a daredevil side and loves the outdoors. He took his Jeep Rubicon, nicknamed the "Bruticon," to Moab, Utah for camping and offroading. By the looks of his photos, things got pretty wild in the desert. And if you look under the hood of the "Bruticon," you'll find a hemi engine complete with Notre Dame logo, of course.
6) He has an amazing garage
Bruton loves everything with wheels. His garage contains his mountain bikes and the "Bruticon" as well as sports cars and motorcycles. There are plenty more pictures of his motorcyles where this came from. Did I mention he's a thrill-seeker?
7) He has plenty of athlete friends
This guy knows everybody. In Colorado, he often shared photos of X-Games snowboarders like Shaun White and Arielle Gold, both Olympians. He also worked with 1500 meter bronze medalist Jenny Simpson on an advertising campaign to protect the forests of Boulder.
8) He's a massive Cavaliers fan
Bruton loves basketball and often attended Nuggets games. In fact, he watched Kobe Bryant play his last game in Denver. But most of all, he loves the Cavaliers. Bruton and his son went to the NBA Finals to cheer on Cleveland. He also geeked out getting to meet Doris Burke (who wouldn't?).
9) He's a dapper dresser
The new Redskin has style. He and his Denver teammates went all out to dress for the Super Bowl. Earlier in the season, Sports Illustrated named the Broncos the best dressed team in the NFL.
10. He doesn't take himself too seriously
Best of all, Bruton clearly doesn't take anything too seriously. He often jokes about himself ... including that time he ripped his favorite pair of jeans helping his son work out.
