Semin for Iginla? - NBA Capsules

About the Show

Alex Semin is no stranger to trade rumors and with hismysterious absence from the lineup the past two games theyve picked up steamin recent days.
The latest comes from a story on Hockey Buzz that says theCapitals and Calgary Flames have had discussions about a deal that would bring rightwing Jarome Iginla to Washington, along with defenseman Chris Butler and a prospect. In exchange the Flames would receive Semin and goaltenderBraden Holtby, along with draft picks.
If that seems too good to be true for Caps fans, well, itis. From a financial standpoint, the Caps simply cant take on that muchsalary. While the Caps would be shedding what remains of Semins one-year,6.7 million contract, theyd also inherit the final two years of Iginlascontract, which is valued at 7 million a season. Butler has two years (this and next)remaining on a contract that pays him 1.25 million a year. Already at the caplimit, that would increase the Caps' payroll by 1.55 million.
If the Capitals have any shot of trading Semin, 27, for Iginla,34, they likely would need to include a player from their current roster(perhaps goaltender Michal Neuvirth?) just to clear the salary space necessary forIginla, who has nine goals and 18 points and is a minus-5 in 27 games withCalgary. The fact Semin has been scratched the past two games with amysterious shoulder injury does not exactly help his trade value. But he didpractice with Alex Ovechkin and Nicklas Backstrom on Tuesday and the three areexpected to be reunited Wednesday night when the Caps visit the Ottawa Senators. This much is certain the trade rumors involving Semin willintensify with each day leading up to the Feb. 27 NHL trade deadline. Unless, of course, Dale Hunter can find a way to get more out of the Russian winger.
