For the first two weeks, the voluntary workouts have more closely resembled a fitness class at a local health club than football. It’s been strictly about strength and conditioning. Only strength and conditioning coaches have been allowed to work with players. Jay Gruden, Jim Haslett and company have been permitted to meet with the players but not on the field.

That changes today. The coaches can join the players on the field and they can line up and run plays.

It still will be short of actual football. For one thing, the offense can’t line up against the defense so the plays will be run against air. No helmets can be worn.

They will have to work quickly. The session can last up to four hours but the on-field time is limited to 90 minutes.

For most teams this phase goes on for three weeks but since the Redskins have a new coach they will get to step up their activity with a voluntary veteran minicamp. That is scheduled to run for three days starting next Tuesday, April 29.
