Roster cuts are an inevitable part of NFL training camps; good teams say goodbye to good players. It's a good problem to have, and something the Redskins may experience at the running back position. Alfred Morris and Roy Helu look like locks for the roster, but after that, plenty of questions.

In the preseason opening win against New England, rookie running backs Lache Seastrunk and Silas Redd impressed while veterans Chris Thompson and Evan Royster turned in average performances. Redd and Seastrunk also had the advantage of matching up against mostly the third- and fourth-string defenders, which may speak to their performances. Regardles of the competition, Seastrunk's speed and Redd's instinctive and powerful inside running will show well on film.

But now, minor training camp injuries are impacting the players. Redd, Seastrunk and Thompson landed on the sidelines with injuries, Thompson perhaps the most serious with an ankle sprain.

"It’s unfortunate for him because he was progressing very well and he needs the reps to do what we’re going to ask him to do on game day," Gruden said of Thompson. "And if he’s not available to get these reps, it’s going to hurt his progress. Injuries happen, unfortunately to him it seems like more often than not."

There is talk the Redskins will try to place on of their talented running backs on the practice squad, which would mean the player clearing waivers.

"Sometimes it’s not always easy to do," Gruden said of placing players on the practice squad. "We’ve just got to hope the fact that our 53 guys that we have active are the ones that we want and we’re able to keep the practice squad guys and develop them for this year, later in the year."

It's likely Washington will have to pick the running backs they want most on the roster. Who should they be? Let us know what you think in the comments.
