Fantasy football WR rankings: Where do you take Josh Gordon?

The latest installment of our fantasy football content focuses on those always exciting and occasionally diva wide receivers. Below is a top 60 + 1 list based on standard scoring, but first...

  • Receivers on this list whose value rises in a one-point per reception (PPR) format: Antonio Brown, Randall Cobb, Andre Johnson, Wes Welker, Julian Edelman.

  • Receivers on this list whose value falls in a PPR format: Keenan Allen, DeSean Jackson, Torrey Smith, Jeremy Maclin, Justin Hunter.

  • Rankings are important, but depending on the situation it's important to improvise. For example, an owner in three-receiver league starts with Larry Fitzgerald and Andre Johnson. That's a quality tandem, but they are who they are. For the third slot, rather than go with the safe-ish Marques Colston or Dwayne Bowe, shoot for the moon with TY Hilton or Sammy Watkins. On the other hand, if you pair together injury-prone receivers like Victor Cruz and Percy Harvin, there is logic in adding solid players like Anquan Boldin and Brian Hartline over riskier types like Kelvin Benjamin and Kenny Stills
  • asked a few fantasy football writers to pick a favorite sleepers at various position. In the case the wide receiver, a player with an Average Draft Position (ADP) beyond 120. Here's what I came up with.

“So many interesting options here including Marvin Jones, Justin Hunter and Kenny Stills, but let me go with Markus Wheaton. A broken pinkie essentially ruined his rookie season in Pittsburgh. The departures of Emmanuel Sanders and Jerricho Cotchery open the door for a starting gig opposite Antonio Brown. The Steelers drafted the 5-foot-11 speedster in the third round for a reason. Based on the team’s history of swapping out one good WR for another, expect to see why this season.”

  • Finally, Josh Gordon. For the moment, No. 39 serves as a placeholder until we learn whether the Cleveland Browns star will play this year and if so for how many games. Suspended for the year after failing a drug test, Gordon's appeal was heard on Tuesday. If he wins, meaning the suspension is significantly reduced if not altogether lifted, then he zooms back into the top 25 if not much, much higher. If he loses, re-drafters can move on why keeper league can ponder Gordon in the later rounds. For those drafting before the ruling - earliest estimates are sometime next week - don't feel shy about taking Gordon when the time is right. Talk about the ultimate flyer.
