2014 Fantasy Football Rankings: The top 150

Now that training camps are in full swing and preseason games are set to kick off league-wide this week, it's time for our latest look at the overall 2014 fantasy football rankings. This version expands the list to 150 players, from Jamaal Charles to Roy Helu Jr. with the Tony Romo's, DeSean Jackson's and Dennis Pitta's in between.

  • Peyton Manning (21) is the only quarterback ranked among the top 25. Only three crack the top 50 (Aaron Rodgers, 30; Drew Brees, 36). If we're talking best fantasy players, that trio of passing studs and several behind them should be higher on the board. They are where they are based on draft strategy. While I'm not one of those fantasy players who tells you it's a sin against mankind to draft a quarterback in the first three rounds, I won't take one early this year barring tremendous value like Manning at 21 or Rodgers at 30. Taking a QB early can throw an entire draft out of whack because of the need to reach for backs and receivers in subsequent rounds. With a deep and frankly a comparable group from 5-13, waiting on a QB even to the point of selecting the 11th (Tony Romo), 12th (Nick Foles) or 13th (Colin Kaepernick) option won't put an owner at a significant disadvantage. It better not cause that's my plan of attack.
  • Zac Stacy (Rams) and Doug Martin (Buccaneers) are moving in opposite directions among running backs. Both St. Louis (Tre Mason) and Tampa Bay (Charles Sims) selected an RB in the third round of the NFL Draft, leading to speculation about potential timeshares or reduced workloads for the incumbents. In the case of inside running Stacy that's not taking shape yet. Though the shifty Mason remains an intriguing long-term sleeper, he's yet to pull ahead of Benny Cunningham as Stacy's backup, let alone challenge for a sizable role. Factor in St. Louis' desire to run and Stacy is a borderline RB1. Meanwhile, all indications have the Bucs planning on giving Sims and Bobby Rainey work along with Martin, who remains the lead back, but is unlikely to touch the ball 22-25 times per game as he often did during his first two years in the league.
  • Browns rookie Johnny Manziel practiced with the Cleveland's first team on Monday. Don't assume this means Johnny Football will be Johnny starter in Week 1. The Browns would love to let the ticket and merchandize buying world just that, but Brian Hoyer remains the leader in the clubhouse. It's an experience thing, not to mention we still need to see if all of Manziel's improvisation skills we work on the NFL level. Just remember that a QB can have fantasy success without much in the NFL. That's why Manziel remains worth selecting as an upside QB2 play even if he's nothing more than trade bait. Owners in your league won't take your calls about a deal for Josh McCown or Sam Bradford. Let them see Johnny Football shimmying past would-be tacklers toward the end zone and they'll be calling you. Just don't get caught up in the hype yourself on draft day.
  • Deep sleeper watch: There is a running back situation in RIchmond this week fantasy owners should monitor and it has nothing to do with Alfred Morris and Roy Helu Jr.  Rookie James White, selected out of Wisconsin in the fourth round by the Patriots, has become a training camp darling. That type of buzz pops up in nearly every training camp, but what makes this worth mentioning is that the Patriots have a history of shaking up their RB depth chart and turning an unknown into a fantasy force. One prominent Patriots beat writer stated he's now wondering whether White will cut into Stevan Ridley's work on early downs based on how many reps the rookie has received in camp, including around the goal line. Shane Vereen remains the back to own in New England, especially in PPR formats.
