Kendall Fuller and Anthony Harris both were named to yet another watch list on Friday as the Jim Thorpe Award Watch List was released.
The Thorpe Award is presented annually by the Jim Thorpe Association to the nation’s best defensive back. Thirty-nine players were named to the watch list, five from the ACC. Given how both players performed last season, it is hard to argue with either Fuller or Harris’ inclusion.
Fuller quickly established himself in 2013 and started 12 of 13 games in his freshman season. The Baltimore native was named the ACC’s defensive rookie of the year after making 58 tackles and six interceptions.
The 2013 season was a breakout year for Harris who led the nation in interceptions with eight. He had caught only one interception prior to 2013.
Both players will be key to their team’s success in 2014 as evidenced by the national attention they have received this offseason. Along with the Thorpe watch list, Fuller and Harris were also listed on the Bednarik and Nagurski watch lists, both awarded to the nation’s best defensive player.
With so much preseason attention focusing on these two standout defensive backs, they will not be able to catch the ACC off guard in 2014 as they did last season. Even so, these two playmakers are clearly players to keep an eye on.
