Apps give Marine Corps Marathon participants new ways to track race

The Marine Corps Marathon is entering the 21st century.

New for the 37th edition of the Marine Corps Marathon (MCM), runners and supporters can take advantage of enhanced technologies providing immediate updates on a runners progress as well as valuable course navigation information.

The services are free and sponsored by Nissan. For spectators, the new MCM Locator provides distances to specific on-course sites, Metro wait times and pace-time based information. Users can also determine a runners approximate time of arrival at a particular location with the new pace time function.

Track a Runner enables relatives, friends and supporters ability to follow a runner every 10K along the course with real time updates delivered via email or text message. Additionally, runners can announce their race-day progress via Facebook or via Twitter at each 10K mark and at the finish line with the Runner Broadcast Service.

The Marine Corps Marathon will take place on Sunday, Oct. 28. The MCM Track a Runner and the new Runner Broadcast Service are open for registration at www.marinemarathon.com.

Orioles sign Logan Ondrusek from Japan to bolster pen

The Orioles reached all the way to Japan in an attempt to bolster their bullpen. On Friday, the Orioles signed 31-year-old right-hander Logan Ondrusek, who spent five seasons with the Cincinnati Reds and the last two with the Yakult Swallows. 

Ondrusek immediately joins the Orioles in Toronto, and Chaz Roe was designated for assignment. 

From 2010-14, Ondrusek was 21-11 with a 3.89 ERA in 281 games with Cincinnati. In 2015 and 2016, Ondrusek was 8-3 with 11 saves and a 2.17 ERA in 102 games with the Swallows. 

“Ondrusek is a proven major league pitcher with good stuff and we believe he can help our major league club now,” Orioles Executive Vice President of Baseball Operations Dan Duquette wrote in a text message. 

Roe, who was 1-0 with a 3.72 ERA in nine games this season.

Nats place C Jose Lobaton on disabled list, call up Severino

Nats place C Jose Lobaton on disabled list, call up Severino

The Nationals will be without Jose Lobaton for at least a few days, as they placed the backup catcher on the disabled list Friday retroactive to July 20. Lobaton is dealing with left elbow tendinitis.

Taking his place on the roster will be catcher Pedro Severino, who was recalled from Triple-A Syracuse. This is Severino's second stint with the Nats this season.

Lobaton, 31, takes a break after holding a .194 average with one homer and three RBI through 22 games. He last played on July 19 against the Dodgers and has only appeared in four games this month.

Severino, 23, only made one appearance with the Nats when he replaced Wilson Ramos, who went on the bereavement list in late April. Severino also played two games with the Nationals last season.

Known more for his defensive abilities, Severino has a .259 average with two homers and 17 RBI in 73 games at Triple-A this season.
