How’s this for a disaster waiting to happen? An opinionated hockey referee takes to social media shortly after officiating a game and begins mocking the city in which he just worked.
The referee in question is Joe Monette of the Ontario Hockey League who worked an OHL game in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario last Friday.
Soon after the game’s conclusion, Monette tweeted via his @Monzy25 account: “Soo Saint Marie, two words, Slim Pickens. #noteeth #hicktown, #allfaties.”
Monette was immediately removed from his scheduled game in Sault Ste. Marie last Saturday (probably for the best), and on Wednesday he learned that it may be a while before he works again.
OHL Commissioner David Branch announced Wednesday that Monette has been suspended of any future officiating assignments for the balance of the 2012-13 regular season and playoffs.
“Mr. Monette displayed extremely poor judgment,” Branch explained in a statement, “and the ‘tweet’ not only contravened the League’s Social Networking Policy, but as well was detrimental to the welfare of the League, the officiating staff and fans of the OHL. The League apologizes to those that may have been offended by such comments.”
Monette has since apologized on his now protected twitter account, saying that “My tweet was not meant to be offensive and was meant as a joke between myself and a buddy of mine that lives in the Soo. I apologize if I offended anybody.”
