USA Hockey took a page from its past and infused it with a new look Monday with the unveiling of Team USA’s Olympic hockey jerseys at Kettler Capitals Iceplex.

The jerseys are dark blue and feature a gold outlined shield with the letters USA in white, along with red and white vertical stripes. The sleeves bear the players’ numbers with red and white strips at the elbows. There are also stars sprinkled across the upper chest and shoulders.

Stitched into the jerseys are homages to the 1960 and 1980 U.S. teams that won Olympic gold medals. The jerseys also have the phrase “land of the free, home of the brave.”

“It looks great,” Capitals defenseman and Olympic invitee John Carlson told reporters after the unveiling. “It is not too flashy, but flashy enough.”

Team USA coach Dan Bylsma got his first peek at the jersey, which will also be worn by the women's Olympic hockey team, a few days ago.

“I saw the jersey and that was a special moment for me,” Bylsma said.

“The crest, the colors, the flag. I can see those same things when we get together in Sochi for the first time. Just hearing the anthem today [before the unveiling of the jerseys]. I’m looking forward to hearing that anthem over there in the Olympic Games.”
