Karl Alzner injured in 2nd period
Tampa Bay forward Richard Panik has been suspended two games by the NHL for his hit on Karl Alzner Tuesday night.
With about 3:30 remaining in the second period, Alzner skated with the puck in the neutral zone near the boards. Just after he dumped the puck, Panik hit him from behind sending him headfirst into the boards. He initially appeared stunned, but was able to skate to the bench under his own power. He would return in the third period.
The Department of Player Safety released a video explaining its decision. The facts that Alzner was not injured and that Panik had never been fined or suspended before were labeled as key points in the decision.
Panik was assessed a major penalty at the time which proved critical as the Capitals were able to score twice on the power play to tie the game at four. The Capitals went on to win the game 6-5 in a shootout.
