10.30.13: Caps week in review

Alex Ovechkin sat out Wednesday’s practice with an undisclosed upper body injury after suffering an injury in the first period of the Capitals’ 3-2 loss in Vancouver and is questionable for Friday night’s game in Philadelphia against the Flyers, Caps coach Adam Oates said.

“I think in the first period some time,” Oates said of Ovechkin’s injury. “He told me he was a little sore and I think as the game went along he got a little [more] sore. Yesterday was an off day, we traveled, so he’s getting checked out today.”

Asked if Ovechkin would be available to play on Friday, Oates said “I probably shouldn’t answer that. I don’t want to say something and be wrong. We’ll find out later today and we’ll see how he is [Thursday].”

Oates also confirmed Ovechkin does not have a concussion.

Ovechkin leads the Caps with 10 goals, accounting for nearly 30 percent of the team’s total offense [34 goals].

“He’s obviously our key contributor and he’s got a hot stick right now, so somebody else will have to step up and fill his spot,” defenseman Mike Green said. “I don’t know where’s he’s at. I think he’s OK. I think this is more of a rest for him. We’ll see.”

Oates said the Caps’ forward lines – he had Marty Erat replace Marcus Johansson on the top line and had Johansson on a second line with Brooks Laich and Troy Brouwer – was a product of Ovechkin missing practice.
