Ovechkin and Johansson collide at practice in scary moment

The Capitals’ scrimmage against the Reading Royals Tuesday morning got off to a bang when Alex Ovechkin and Marcus Johansson had to leave the ice after a neutral zone collision.

Midway through the opening period Ovechkin, who was playing right wing, and Johansson, who was on the left side, crossed paths and blindsided each other. Both players were slow to get to their feet and Ovechkin went to the locker room with a bloody chin, apparently the result of hitting Johnasson’s face shield.

A few minutes later both players returned to the ice and finished the period. And in the second period Ovechkin scored his first legitimate goal of training camp, then set up another by linemate Nicklas Backstrom.

Defenseman Mike Green sat out the game with a cold, while defenseman Cameron Schilling was returned to the Hershey Bears.

With Green out of the lineup coach Adam Oates used newcomer Jack Hillen on a defense pairing with Roman Hamrlik.
