"BULLSEYE!" Ovechkin's first goal of the year puts the Caps up 3-1
The Capitals earned their first victory of the season with a 3-2 win over the Buffalo Sabres Sunday afternoon in front of a sellout crowd at Verizon Center.
Game in a nutshell: Joel Ward, John Erskine and Alex Ovechkin lit the lamp and Michal Neuvirth shut the door down the stretch as the Capitals picked up their first win of the season.
Line shuffling: After starting the game with Alex Ovechkin on the left side of center Jay Beagle and right wing Joey Crabb, Adam Oates reunited last year’s top line of Ovechkin with Nicklas Backstrom and Troy Brouwer in the second period and all three players dominated play the remainder of the game.
Hit of the game: Ovechkin rolled over 6-foot-8 defensenan Tyler Myers in the first period and caught an earful of expletives from Patrick Kaleta because of it.
Loose pucks: The Sabres were without leading scorer Thomas Vanek, who suffered a muscle strain against Carolina Friday night. Vanek had nine points [3 goals, 6 assists] in his first four games this season. The Capitals return to action Tuesday night when they visit the Ottawa Senators. The Sabres return home to face the Maple Leafs on Tuesday.
