According to a report in USAToday, the NHL Players Association has provided its members with a survival guide in the event of a Sept. 15 lockout.

Entitled, How Does A Lockout Affect Me? the memo provides players with useful information regarding their right to play in other leagues and their right to full pay if they are recovering from injuries.

If you are unfit to play because of a hockey-related injury when a lockout begins, you are entitled to receive your salary until you are fit to play, the memo said. If you are currently injured, you should make sure that your condition is fully documented and that your club is aware of it. If you do not receive your salary payment when it becomes due, you should contact your agent andor the NHLPA legal department immediately.

If the information in the memo is accurate, injured Capitals defenseman Tom Poti is entitled to collect his full salary of 2.875 million in the event of a lockout. Right wing Joel Ward, who underwent offseason surgery to repair a sports hernia, also would be eligible for full pay until he recovers.

The memo also outlines players rights to play in other professional leagues in the event of a lockout and their responsibilities to return to their NHL teams in the event of a settlement.

The Swedish Elite League recently stated that players interested in signing contracts to play in that league must commit to a full season.

Capitals forward Marcus Johansson said Thursday he wants nothing more than to build on the 14 goals and 46 points he produced in his second season with the Caps last year. Because he is on an entry-level contract, Johansson is believed to be eligible to play for the Capitals AHL Hershey Bears this season, along with Braden Holtby and Dmitry Orlov.

Johansson said he would be interested in playing in Sweden, but would need to speak with Capitals general manager George McPhee before deciding where to play.

I havent really thought about what Im going to do if there would be a lockout, Johansson said. Of course, it would be fun to play there in Sweden. But this is the situation now and well see what happens.

I dont know what George wants for me, either. Well take that when it happens, if it happens.
