News and notes as the Capitals head into tonight’s NHL draft at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia [7 p.m., NBCSN]:

Nine and counting: The Capitals are one of five NHL teams [Kings, Blues, Stars and Islanders are the others] with nine picks in this year’s seven-round draft. They picked up extra picks in the fourth round [from the Islanders in exchange for Jaroslav Halak] and the seventh round [from Nashville in exchange for Jaynen Rissling]. Since 2006, 16 of the Caps’ draft picks have appeared in at least one game for the Capitals and have combined to play in 2,188 games for Washington.

Youngins: Last season, the Caps’ opening night roster had an average age of 27 years and 65 days old, the eighth youngest roster in the NHL.

Good year: The Capitals’ 2012 NHL draft class has combined to play in 116 NHL games, ranking second in the NHL. Only the Buffalo Sabres [120] have yielded more NHL

games from their 2012 draft class. Tom Wilson registered 10 points [3 goals, 7assists] in 82 games for Washington last season and Connor Carrick recorded six points (1g, 5a) in 34 games.

Homegrown goaltending: During the last four seasons, goaltenders drafted by the Caps have accounted for 125 of the team’s 155 wins [80.6% percent].

Here’s a look where the Caps pick in this weekend’s draft.

Round 1 will take place tonight, with Rounds 2 through 7 beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday.
