We all knew Alex Ovechkin would be representing Russia in the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi.

But on Monday Braden Holtby, Karl Alzner and Mike Green received invitations to attend Team Canada’s Olympic orientation camp from Aug. 25-28 in Calgary; John Carlson was invited to Team USA’s camp at Kettler Capitals Iceplex on Aug. 26-27; and Evgeny Kuznetsov was asked to attend Russia’s orientation camp in Sochi on Aug. 23-24.

Nicklas Backstrom and Marcus Johansson already received invitations to the Swedish team’s Olympic camp and Martin Erat is expected to receive a similar offer from Team Czech Republic.

That means as many as 10 members of the Capitals organization could be representing five different countries during the men’s Olympic ice hockey tournament from Feb. 12-23.

Holtby was the biggest surprise among the Capitals invitees. The 23-year-old netminder has played in just 57 regular season games in the NHL, another 21 in the playoffs.

Holtby earned the invitation because of his strong performances in the past two post-seasons, where he has posted a 2.04 goals-against average and .931 save percentage. Holtby will be joined by netminders Roberto Luongo, Carey Price, Mike Smith and Corey Crawford. The team is expected to carry three goalies.

Of the Capitals who have been invited to the Olympic orientation camps, only Ovechkin has actually competed in the Olympics.
