Ovechkin scores 30th of the season with quick snap shot

Rookie goaltender Philipp Grubauer will make his fifth start of the season tonight at Verizon  Center when Bruce Boudreau brings his red-hot Anaheim Ducks to Washington.

“He played good against Carolina [39 saves Friday night] and he’s been hot [4-0-1], so we’re going to ride him,” Capitals coach Adam Oates said.

Grubauer has appeared in five of the Caps’ last six games and owns a 2.05 GAA and .940 save percentage. His start means Braden Holtby will watch from the bench for the fifth time in eight games.

“I don’t think I have to worry about Holts getting motivated,” Oates said. “He’s a motivated guy. I want Holts to try and get better, just like I want everybody to try to get better.”

Brooks Laich also will play tonight and is likely to replace Aaron Vollpatti as a fourth-line left wing. Laich has been sidelined since Nov. 27 with groin pain.

“We want him to be 100 percent and he said he’s 100 percent,” Oates said. “We have to trust him.”
