Free agency: Major moves shake up Caps roster

The Capitals of tomorrow will hit the ice today at Kettler Capitals Iceplex in Arlington.

Twenty one players, including first round selections Tom Wilson [2012] and Andre Burakovsky [2013] have accepted invitations to participate in the Caps’ six-day development camp, which is open to the public and runs through Saturday.

Players participating in the camp range in age from 18-year-old right wing Brian Pinho, who was born May 11, 1995, to 23-year-old defenseman Patrick Wey, who was born March 21, 1990.

Russian center/right wing Evgeny Kuznetsov, the Capitals’ top pick in the 2010 NHL Entry draft, remains unsigned and will not be attending the camp.

While this week’s development camp provides instruction and an introduction to training methods employed by the Capitals, there are a handful of players who could challenge for a spot on the Caps’ 2013-14 roster and the Caps’ coaching staff.

Here are some of them:

No. 43 Tom Wilson, RW, 6-foot-3, 205 pounds [16th overall, 2012]

At last year’s development camp Wilson slammed so many bodies along the boards he had to be told to tone it down to keep everyone healthy. He piled up 58 points [23 goals and 35 assists] in 48 games for the OHL Plymouth Whalers last season and made his NHL debut in the 2013 Stanley Cup playoffs, playing the final three games of the Caps’ six-game loss to the Rangers.

Riley Barber, RW, 5-foot-11, 194 pounds [167th overall in 2012]

Barber may wind up being the steal of last year’s draft. As a freshman at Miami-Ohio Barber recorded 39 points [15 goals, 24 assists] in 40 games and led the U.S. Under-20 team to a gold medal with three goals and three assists in seven games.

Andre Burakovsky, LW, 6-foot-1, 178 pounds [23rd overall, 2013]

Burakovsky is probably two years away from cracking the Caps’ lineup but fans will get a chance to see why he was ranked 13th by Hockey Prospectus and 16th by International Scouting. A flashy playmaker with a hard, accurate shot, Burakovsky is weighing the options of returning to Sweden or playing major junior with the Erie Otters of the OHL, who took him fifth overall in the import draft.

Nate Schmidt, D, 5-foot-11, 199 pounds [signed as free agent]

Schmidt split last season between the University of Minnesota, where he finished his third season with nine goals and 23 assists in 40 games, and the Hershey Bears, where he added one goal and three assists in nine games. Schmidt is a solid, left-handed defenseman who could challenge Dmitry Orlov, Tomas Kundratek and Steve Oleksy for a roster spot.

Patrick Wey. D, 6-foot-2, 203 pounds [115th overall, 2009]

Wey recently completed his fourth year at Boston College, where he picked up one goal, 12 assists and a career-high 54 penalty minutes in 37 games. A rugged defenseman who shoot right, Wey was named Hockey East’s top defensive defenseman and could add some muscle to the Caps’ right side of the ice if he has a better training camp than Orlov, Kundratek, Oleksy and Schmidt.
