Our take: Nine years in a row now the San Jose Sharks have reached the NHL playoffs. That doesn’t look to change this season, though you can question if better health and some minor roster moves are enough to put the Sharks back in the mix with the Blackhawks and Kings – the last two Stanley Cup champions.
The early concern is the health of forward Martin Havlat, who missed most of the playoffs with a groin injury. He had hip surgery in the offseason and is back skating – but no one knows when he will return to the ice.
Patrick Marleau and Joe Thornton remain the stalwarts up front. The third line looks formidable with Tyler Kennedy now aboard, too, next to Joe Pavelski. Can veteran blueliner Dan Boyle continue to play at a high level at age 37? Antti Niemi, who himself won a cup with Chicago in 2010, was again one of the league’s best goalies.
Offseason Grade: B
Will they make the playoffs in 2013-14: Yes.
