Oates very angry with call against Erskine

On most nights, Adam Oates is a picture of quiet intensity behind the Capitals bench.

On Friday night, that intensity was taken to another level when Oates went into an expletive-filled tirade following a second-period altercation between Caps defenseman John Erskine and Leafs captain Dion Phaneuf.

The two ruffians exchanged shoves after the whistle and Erskine gave Phaneuf a gloved face wash under the visor. Linesman Mark Shewchyk stepped between the two players and Phaneuf took a pair of swipes at Erskine, connecting on one of them.

When Erskine tried to respond, he was bear-hugged by linesman John Grandt.

Oates had no trouble with the altercation until he heard Erskine received four minutes for roughing and Phaneuf earned just two.

“I don’t agree with the call,” Oates said. “Phaneuf gave him two shots and the ref’s in the way. I don’t know how you even that up [with coincidental roughing minors]. I don’t. That’s automatic because, C’mon , we all saw it.

“If Ersk all of a sudden goes through the linesman at [Phaneuf], now what do we got?”

You’ve got a suspension for abusing an official.

As it turned out the Caps killed the penalty and Erskine responded to a challenge by Colton Orr by knocking him to the ice with a hard right hand. Second earlier, Tom Wilson pounded on Carter Ashton in another good bout.

Alex Ovechkin said he enjoyed watching the fisticuffs.

“Especially against great guys who can fight,” Ovechkin said. “They started playing a little bit rough against us and those guys stepped up and showed them who the boss is.”

Any time Orr loses a fight it’s a good night for most of his opponents.

“He’s a kind of guy who plays all the time hard and Ersk win the fight,” Ovechkin said.
