Are the Capitals in a rut?

After making him a healthy scratch the past 17 games, the Caps have placed defenseman Alex Urbom on waivers, apparently with the intent of calling up another defenseman from the Hershey Bears.

“Roster issues,” Capitals coach Adam Oates said when asked why Urbom was waived. “People we want to see come up.”

The Caps claimed Urbom, 23, off waivers at the start of the season and in 20 games he recorded one goal, one assist and was a plus-1 while averaging 14:36 in ice time.

“His game was good early and then a few mistakes here and there,” Oates said. “Ersk [John Erskine] comes back and Orly [Dmitry Orlov] came up and played good and he was the odd-man out all of a sudden, and we had to make a decision.”

There are two possibilities at play here. Either the Capitals recall Nate Schmidt from the Hershey Bears, or they’re working on a trade and need the roster and salary space – Urbom makes $567,500 -- to make it work.
