Capitals' defenseman Mike Green left Saturday’s practice early with a lower body injury and is questionable for Sunday’s game in New York against the Rangers, according to Capitals coach Adam Oates.

“Just being precautious,” Oates said.

Green will make the trip to New York and will likely decide on Sunday morning if he’ll play in the 6 p.m. game. If he cannot play, Oates said Tom Poti will take his place on a top pairing with Karl Alzner.

Losing Green would be a major blow to the Caps. He leads the club in average ice time (26:33) and ranks sixth in the NHL in that department. He also quarterbacks the power play from the right point and leads all Caps defensemen with seven points.

Green underwent surgery to repair a sports hernia midway through last season and was sidelined a total of 50 games. He said earlier this season that he felt the best he has in years.

Meanwhile, forward Brooks Laich [groin] looks no closer to returning to the Capitals’ lineup than he did last week. Laich participated in some practice drills Saturday but appeared cautious when going into the corners for battle drills.
