Déjà vu? The Caps are 1-3-0 after four games this season. They were 0-3-1 after four games last season, when they didn’t get the first win until Game No. 5. Last season the Caps were outscored 17-8 and were getting shaky goaltending efforts. This season they’ve been outscored 15-12 and their goaltending has been marginally better. Last season Alex Ovechkin had no goals and one assist after four games. This year Ovechkin has five goals and two assists through four games.
Erat by the numbers: Marty Erat played a season-high 9:15 Thursday night, including 2:06 of shorthanded time. Erat also delivered two hits while playing on a line with Tom Wilson and Michael Latta.
What’s ahead: The Caps return to action Saturday night against Patrick Roy’s 4-0-0 Colorado Avalanche. Former Caps goalie Semyon Varlamov is expected to get the start in goal, his first for the Caps since being traded to the Avalanche on July 1, 2011 for two first-round picks and a conditional second rounder. The Caps turned those picks into Filip Forsberg, who was traded to Nashville for Marty Erat and Michael Latta, Troy Brouwer, and Mike Ribeiro.
