Capitals defenseman Karl Alzner wants a little more love from the sports fans in D.C.

At least from the folks who eat at the same restaurant.

After Game 6 Sunday night, Alzner was out to dinner when he overheard a fan dissing the Capitals chances against the Boston Bruins.

I heard people say we didnt even deserve to be in the series and we shouldnt even be in the playoffs, Alzner said. Its hard to understand why people are saying that.

Because we didnt finish first or second place in the regular season were not worthy of being in the payoffs or being on the same ice as Boston? Thats one thing we want to prove. That regardless of how the regular season went were a good hockey team and it matters now. For us its proving a lot of people wrong and it would be really nice to do it.

The Caps have that chance in Game 7 Wednesday night in Bostons TD Garden, where they are 4-1 this season.

Alzner made it clear that the Capitals have just as good a chance at winning the Stanley Cup this season as any other team in the NHL and theyve proven it by playing the defending champions even through six games.

Alzner also pointed out that the last time the Caps were faced with a Game 7 two years ago at home against the Montreal Canadiens, all of the pressure was on them to close out the series, something Jaroslav Halak kept them from doing.

Its flipped around this time, he said. Last time we were the big dogs and we were supposed to win. Now were the underdogs and were looking to do the same thing that happened to us.

In 2003 the New Jersey Devils finished as the seventh seed in the regular season and went on to the Stanley Cup Final, where they lost to the Anaheim Ducks.

In 2010 the seventh-seeded Philadelphia Flyers also reached the Cup Final, where they were eliminated by the Chicago Blackhawks.

So why not the Capitals?

Its definitely not a stretch, Alzner said. If we can get past this series we feel extremely confident. Weve done such a good job against Boston that it would be a shame not to finish it.
