Contract negotiations between the Capitals and center Mikhail Grabovski are expected to continue through this week, according to Grabovski’s agent, Gary Greenstin.

Greenstin said he spoke with Capitals general manager George McPhee for about 20 minutes during the Capitals’ trip to California two weeks ago but remains unsure if Grabovski will re-sign with the Caps or test free agency on July 1.

“Grabo wants to win a Stanley Cup more than anything,” Greenstin said. “The money is important and he’ll get his money. But it’s most important for him to be on a team that can win.”

Asked if that team may be the Capitals, Greenstin said, “We’ll see.”

Grabovski, 30, signed a one-year, $3 million contract with the Capitals after receiving an eight-year, $14.3 million buyout from the Toronto Maple Leafs. He is believed to be seeking a contract of at least three years and worth $5 million a season.

Grabovski has missed 24 games this season because of injuries. In the 52 games he has played for the Caps, Grabovski has 12 goals and 21 assists. Over a full 82 games that would equate to 19 goals and 33 assists.

Caps sign Bowey: The Capitals announced Wednesday they have signed defenseman Madison Bowey to a three-year, entry-level contract beginning next season.

Bowey, 18, was drafted by the Capitals in the second round [53rd overall] of the 2013 NHL draft and spent the last three seasons with the Kelowna Rockets of the Western Hockey League. Bowey put up 21 goals and 39 assists with 93 penalty minutes in 72 games with the Rockets this season and was named the team’s captain on Nov. 1.

The Winnipeg native helped lead Kelowna to the best record in the WHL this season [57-11-0-4, 118 points] and finished the regular-season ranked tied for eighth in the WHL in plus/minus [plus-44], fourth among WHL defensemen in goals and tied for eighth among defensemen in points.
