Burakovsky: I wanna be like Backstrom

NEWARK -- When Sunday’s marathon NHL draft – seven rounds in seven hours totaling 211 selections and 16 trades – drew to a close at the Prudential Center, the Capitals had what they hope will be six pieces of their future.

At day’s end, the Caps had taken left wing Andre Burakovsky [23rd overall], defenseman Madison Bowey [53rd overall], left wing Zach Sanford [61st overall], defenseman Blake Heinrich [144th overall], center Brian Pinho [174th overall] and defenseman Tyler Lewington [204th overall].

Here are thumbnail sketches of all six draft picks and a scouting report from Capitals Director of Amateur Scouting Ross Mahoney, who looked surprisingly refreshed after a frantic day on the draft floor:

Andre Burakovsky [1st round, 23rd overall]

Position: Left Wing

Shoots: Left

Ht/Wt: 6-foot-1, 176 pounds

Age: 18

Final ranking: 6

Born: Klagenfurt, Austria

2012-13 team: Malmo [Sweden-2]

Stats: 4-7-11 in 43 games, 8 PIM

Notes: Raised in Sweden. Father, Robert, was selected 217th overall by the Rangers and played 23 games for Ottawa Senators in 1993-94. Helped Sweden win gold medal in 2012 U-18 World Championships. Saw limited ice time with Malmo.

Mahoney’s scouting report: “He’s a very good skater. Really good hands and a very intelligent player. As for as his development, he needs to get stronger. He’s got really good [hockey] sense, really good hands and a really good skater.”

Madison Bowey [2nd round, 53rd overall]

Position: Defense

Shoots: Right

Ht/Wt: 6-foot-1, 195 pounds

Age: 18

Final ranking: 32

Born: Winnipeg

2012-13 team: Kelowna [WHL]

Stats: 12-18-30 in 69 games, 75 PIM

Notes: Ranked sixth among WHL defenseman with plus-41 rating. Won gold medal with Canada’s U-18 team. Excelled in baseball, pitching for Team Manitoba in 2010 Under-15 Canada Baseball Championship. Gave up baseball for hockey at age 15. Father, Will, played professional hockey in Europe.

Mahoney’s scouting report: “A good skater, very strong. He played very well for Team Canada, who won a gold medal in the Under 18 tournament, an assistant captain on that team, which speaks to his character. We were really happy to get him there.”

Zach Sanford [2nd round, 61st overall]

Position: Left Wing

Shoots: Left

Ht/Wt: 6-foot-3, 168 pounds

Age: 18

Final ranking: 60

Born: Salem, Mass.

2012-13 team: Islanders [EJHL]

Stats: 12-24-36 in 37 games, 22 PIM

Notes: Compares himself to Toronto power forward James van Riemsdyk. Ranked fourth on his team in points [36]. Added four goals and four assists in seven playoff games. Committed to BostonCollege in 2014-15.

Mahoney’s scouting report: “Very raw. Some of these guys have played at a lot higher level than he has until this year. His improvement during the year was tremendous. He’s got good size, a lot of upside to him.”

Blake Heinrich [5th round, 144th overall]

Position: Defense

Shoots: Left

Ht/Wt: 5-foot-11, 194 pounds

Age: 18

Final ranking: 81

Born: Cambridge, Minn.

2012-13 team: Sioux City [USHL]

Stats: 3-17-20 in 42 games, 110 PIM

Notes: Finished fourth on the team in penalty minutes and was selected to the 2013 USHL/NHL Top Prospects Game.

Mahoney’s scouting report: “Real good skater and real competitive. Very strong on his skates for his size.”

Brian Pinho [6th Round, 174th overall]

Position: Center

Shoots: Right

Ht/Wt: 6-foot, 171 pounds

Age: 18

Final ranking: 109

Born: Beverly, Mass.

2012-13 team: St. John’s Prep [High School-Mass.]

Stats: 12-24-36 in 21 games, 24 PIM

Notes: Plans on playing in USHL next season. Expected to attend ProvidenceCollege in 2014-15.

Mahoney’s scouting report: “Hard worker. I like his competitiveness. I like that every shift he gives everything he has. Smart player. Plays the point on the power play sometimes.”

Tyler Lewington [7th round, 204th overall]

Position: Defense

Shoots: Right

Ht/Wt: 6-foot-1, 189 pounds

Age: 18

Final ranking: 66

Born: Edmonton

2012-13 team: Medicine Hat [WHL]

Stats: 2-24-26 in 69 games, 131 PIM

Notes: Led the Medicine Hat Tigers in penalty minutes [131].

Mahoney’s scouting report: “He’s very competitive. He was at the Combine. I think he won two or three of the different tests they did. More of a stay-at-home defenseman who competes. He skates well, works hard.”
