Joe Theismann has said repeatedly in recent weeks that he believes Robert Griffin III will be ready for Week 1.

On Tuesday, the former Redskins great took it a step further: Theismann said he also believes RG3 could be a more “refined” quarterback when he returns.

“Unbelievable,” Theismann said on NFL Network’s ‘NFL AM’ show, asked how Griffin looked at Redskins Park last week.

Griffin surprised many observers during Thursday's OTA session, which was open to the media, by how smoothly he dropped back, planted his foot and fired passes. He also appeared to run with relative ease, despite a bulky brace on his right knee.

Theismann, though, was not shocked. He's been tracking Griffin's rehab since the beginning.

“He’s 4½ months removed from the injury, and I visited him on a number of occasions when he was down at Dr. [James] Andrews’ institute” in Gulf Breeze, Fla., Theismann said. “I’ve watched him go through the rehabilitation process. And watching him do all the things he had to do [during the OTA session] and the individual drills they set up for him, his movements, his resets, his plant, his delivery, the way the ball comes out, it actually looks better than it did a year ago, to be honest with you.”

Theismann added: "He’s a more refined quarterback than he was a year ago."

Griffin, who had the ACL, LCL and meniscus in his knee repaired by Andrews on Jan. 9, has said he hopes to receive medical clearance in time to begin training camp with his teammates on July 25.

“Talking to him afterward, you can see the glee in his eyes, and the gleam in his eyes," Theismann said. "He really feels like he’s on the right path. And looking at him throw, I feel the same way.”
