When he was growing up in Kansas, John Riggins dreamed of driving a truck so that he could see the natural wonders all around the USA.

"I dreamed about the redwoods, about the Rocky Mountains,” he told CSNwashington.com. “You name it, I had the wanderlust, I wanted to see it."

Several decades later and after a Hall of Fame career as an NFL player for the Jets and Redskins, Riggins is living out his dreams only he’s not driving an 18-wheeler, he’s driving a Winnebago.

Riggins spent 81 days and logged 14,000 miles on the road last summer during the production of the first season of “Riggo on the Range”, a show that is kind of a cross between the old American Sportsman TV show and the Food Network. Or, as Riggins put it, “This is a cooking show. But unlike the other cooking shows we shop in the national forest for our dinner."

"This show's about having fun. It's about being out with people,” he added.

So where did he shop for groceries during his journey? “I was out to the White Mountains of Arizona, from there to my hometown in Kansas, to Gillette, Wyoming, to North and South Dakota, back down to my hometown, back to Washington (D. C.), then to Washington State and then through Montana and then back to Wyoming, back down to Kansas and then back here (to D. C.),” said Riggins.

The result was 13 shows that ran during the winter and spring on the Sportsman Channel. Those shows will be rebroadcast on Comcast SportsNet starting tomorrow, July 6, at 11:30 a.m.

Among the people who hunted and fished with Riggins are rodeo champion Bobby Harris, former Cowboys quarterback Danny White, and former Redskins tight end Clint Didier. Dexter Manley joined the show for the cooking portion of one episode after Riggins had bagged some wild turkeys.

On tap for the next season of the show are fishing episodes with Joe Gibbs (which included Riggins taking his Winnebago on a couple of laps around Charlotte Motor Speedway) and former Indiana basketball coach Bob Knight.

“Riggo on the Range” will be on Comcast SportsNet every Saturday morning at 11:30 for the rest of the summer and is sponsored by GEICO. For more information and video clips visit www.RiggoontheRange.com
