Tim Hightower, the running back the Redskins re-signed over the weekend, is not exactly a dynamic runner. His career average is a pedestrian 3.9 yards per carry. But that is not the number the Redskins were concerned with when they decided to bring him back. The number they were looking at was 140.That is the number of 2011 sacks posted by the Eagles (50, tied for first in NFL), Giants (48, tied for third), and Cowboys (42, tied for seventh). According to the research of Pat Kirwan of CBSSports.com, the 140 combined sacks were the most posted by any trio of NFL teams in the same division last year. That comes to about three sacks per game by the Redskins NFC East rivals. Washington actually fared a little bit better than the league as a whole controlling the pass rush in its division games. In their six division games the Redskins quarterbacks were sacked 14 times, an average of 2.3 per contest.Still, Robert Griffin III cant have a successful season if he has to deal with Jason Pierre Paul, Trent Cole, and DeMarcus Ware bearing down on him play after play. In his article, Kirwan outlines some ways that the Redskins can counter the heat they will face in the NFC East including developing an effective running game and having RG3 develop a good relationship with tight end Fred Davis. But while schemes and strategies are important, pass protection boils down to the blocker staying in between the defender and the quarterback. Hightower is good at that and when he is healthy and on the field, Trent Williams, who lines up against Ware, Cole, and Justin Tuck in those division games, is too. Those two players will be critical if Griffin is going to lead the Redskins out of their longtime spot in the basement of the NFC East.
The Redskins have started the process of trimming their roster to 75 players by the Tuesday deadline. The team announced that 10 players have been waived.
- T Al Bond
- T Cody Booth
- LB Shiro Davis
- LB Ejiro Ederaine
- CB Jeremy Harris
- LB Willie Jefferson
- WR Valdez Showers
- WR Dez Stewart
- WR Jarvis Turner
- RB Kelsey Young
The only surprise on the list is Jefferson, who was thought to have a chance at an outside linebacker spot. But apparently the coaches are going to let Houston Bates and Lynden Trail compete for that spot.
The Redskins had 88 players counting against the 90 player limit. So with the 10 players cut today they are a 78, leaving three moves to make before 4 p.m. on Tuesday.
The Redskins received "good news" after linebacker Ryan Kerrigan underwent an MRI Saturday to further diagnose a groin injury he suffered in Friday night's preseason victory over the Buffalo Bills, according to multiple reports.
Was told It was good news for Ryan Kerrigan on his MRI. Uncertain if he'll have to miss practice time. That is still to be determined.— John Keim (@john_keim) August 27, 2016
Kerrigan was injured in the first quarter on Friday and he was held out for the remainder of the contest. CSN Insider JP Finlay said the injury was thought to be "minor" after the game.
The injury, regardless of the timetable for his return, exposes a larger issue about the lack of depth in Washington's linebacking corps. Finlay expands on that here.
Dallas Cowboys fans had high expectations for their team this season - as long as quarterback Tony Romo could avoid injury. Three weeks into the preseason, looks like that idea is shot.
The Cowboys discovered a fractured verterbae in Tony Romo's back. Expected to miss 6-10 weeks. Wow— Jason La Canfora (@JasonLaCanfora) August 27, 2016
Getting the start Thursday night against the Seahawks, Romo was slammed to the turf awkwardly and looked to injure his back. Immediate reports showed that Romo felt okay, but clearly the issues persisted.
Last season, Romo broke his collarbone twice and played just four games as the Cowboys limped to a 4-12 record. The season prior Romo led the Cowboys to a 12-4 record and an NFC East title. In 2013, Romo dealt with herniated discs in his back and had a cyst removed.
Without Romo, Dallas will likely turn to rookie Dak Prescott out of Mississippi State. Prescott has looked impressive in the preseason, though it will be tough to step into the spotlight that accompanies the Cowboys quarterback.
Dallas travels to Washington in Week 2 of the regular season, so the Redskins defense can start preparing for Prescott, not Romo.
