It looks like a deal to have Robert Griffin III drive the pace car when NASCAR comes to Richmond next month is gaining steam according to the Richmond Times-Dispatch.

The idea came up in a Twitter conversation between Richmond International raceway president Dennis Brickmeier and popular NASCAR driver and noted Redskins fan Dale Earnhardt Jr. They were talking about the possibility of getting Griffin involved in the pre-race ceremonies in some way when Griffin jumped in, tweeting “I’m game, brother.”

Brickmeier saw a potential marketing bonanza for the April 26 Toyota Owners 400 and jumped into action.

“There are so many great connection points, given that training camp is here, Dale Earnhardt Jr. is a big Redskins fan, and (former coach) Joe Gibbs will be here with his racing team,” Bickmeier said. “Also, Fox TV will broadcast the race, and they have the NFC package of NFL games.”

Some tracks regularly have celebrities drive the pace car while the race cars are warming up and then to lead them to the start/finish line. While that’s something that RIR has never done, it appears that they are willing to break the precedent in order to get Griffin involved.
