Why didn't RGIII talk to the media on Monday?

Robert Griffin III left Redskins Park without speaking to reporters on Monday morning, just about the time the Redskins announced that Mike Shanahan had been fired.

All morning, players streamed into the team’s training facility in Ashburn, Va., for their exit physicals. Less than 24 hours earlier, the Redskins suffered their eighth loss in a row, a 20-6 defeat at the hands of the Giants that capped a miserable 3-13 record.

Griffin was among the players who stopped by their locker stalls to clear out personal effects. A few talked to reporters. Others, however, did not. Griffin was among those who chose not to talk.

Griffin, who was benched by Shanahan for the final three games, was at the center of the majority of the drama that surrounded the team in recent months.

A person familiar with Griffin’s decision not to speak to reporters said he was worried about saying something that could be misconstrued at a sensitive time. Instead, the person said, he wanted to “lay low” as the Redskins regroup and choose a new path.

4 p.m. UPDATE: Griffin eventually held a conference call with reporters where he provided a statement thanking coach Mike Shanahan. RG3 explained he did not want to talk this morning before the coaching change was made official. Click here for more.
