The Redskins continue to take care of their own.

The cap-strapped team re-signed veteran defensive end Kedric Golston to a three-year contract extension Tuesday night according to a league source with knowledge of the deal. The move comes only hours after punter Sav Rocca signed a two-year contract to return to Washington.

While many teams around the NFL spent the opening day of free agency signing some of the biggest names on the market, the Redskins watched from the sidelines. Because of the $18 million cap penalty they’re set to absorb for a second straight season, the team is a mere $3 million under the ceiling.

The tight cap situation, though, has not prevented Mike Shanahan and Co. from retaining many of the players who helped the franchise secure its first division title in 13 years last season.

Golston was a key reserve on that team.

The 29-year-old appeared in all 17 games for the Redskins, recording 16 tackles. Golston has spent his entire seven season career with Washington.

Golstons deal could be worth as much as 5.2 million and includes a signing bonus of $360,000, according to ESPN 980.

Update: Golston confirmed his signing via Twitter:

Just finished signing new 3 yr deal with the Skins. Excited about the future!
