Player: Jordan Reed
Position: Tight end
College: Florida
Height: 6-2
Weight: 236

Quick take: Talent evaluators note that Reed lacks the size of prototypical NFL tight end but displays the athleticism, speed and footwork of a game-breaking pass catcher. He hauled in a team-leading 45 receptions for 559 yards and three touchdowns for the Gators last season. A first team all-SEC selection, Reed frequently is compared to Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez.

Scouting report: Reed enjoyed a breakout season as a redshirt junior, hauling in a team-high 45 receptions for 559 yards and three touchdowns.

He’s a versatile, pass-catching tight end who can be used in motion, out of the backfield or split out wide. And thanks to a combination of body control and agility, his specialty is getting into space and making defenders miss.

Talent evaluators also make note of Reed’s precise route running and speed, which he uses to sprint past defensive backs. He’s often compared to Patriots’ tight end Aaron Hernandez.

Reed was benched in the Gators’ 33-23 Sugar Bowl loss to Louisville for displaying a poor attitude. Coach Mike Shanahan said the Redskins “checked out the story” and do not have any character concerns.

Current depth chart: Fred Davis, Logan Paulsen, Niles Paul and Deangelo Peterson.

Where Reed fits: Although Davis hopes to be ready at the start of the 2013 season after undergoing surgery on his Achilles’ tendon last October, there’s no guarantee he’ll be ready or 100-percent.

Davis is also scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent in 2014. Reed, it would seem, provides insurance just in case Davis walks next offseason.

In the meantime, though, he’ll provide Robert Griffin III with yet another pass-catching threat to complement Pierre Garçon, Josh Morgan and Santana Moss.

What Shanahan said“He’s a guy that has a great ability to make people miss. He can do things with the ball that is very athletic, something a lot of tight ends can’t do. We weren’t necessarily looking for a tight end, but when he was there, we couldn’t pass him up.”

What Reed said: “I have not had any contact whatsoever with the Redskins. Pretty much, I had no idea I was going to get picked by Washington. It was a big surprise to me and I am just so excited.”
