Shanahan on RGIII relationship: "When we go to the local pub."

Redskins offensive lineman Maurice Hurt will be placed on season-ending injured reserve later Wednesday, according to Coach Mike Shanahan.

Hurt had arthroscopic knee surgery in May and spent the offseason and first two months of the regular season on the physically unable to perform list. He returned to practice on Nov. 13, opening a 21-day window for the team to evaluate his progress.

That window closed Wednesday, when the team opted to end Hurt’s season rather than cut another player to clear a spot on the 53-man roster.  The team’s choices were to active Hurt, put him on IR or release him.

Since being drafted in the seventh round in 2011, Hurt has started nine games for Washington.

“He’s looking better, but you got to make a decision what direction you’re going to go and [after] missing all that time, we decided to go in that direction,” Shanahan said.

Shanahan also said that Hurt does not have one injury “in particular” before adding, “You would have to activate somebody or deactivate somebody, so we decided to go in that direction.”
