What prospects are the Redskins watching at Senior Bowl?

MOBILE, Ala.--When the Redskins took the field against the Giants late last month, eight starters on defense had one thing in common: they are all set to become a free agent this offseason.

That likely means Jim Haslett’s 18th-ranked unit will experience a decent amount of turnover in the coming months as draft picks are added, pending free agents are allowed to walk and new players are signed.

Haslett on Wednesday named four current Redskins when asked which players he considered “priorities” as the team decides who to re-sign. And while it’s always possible he overlooked a player or two, it is noteworthy that he singled out linebackers Brian Orakpo and Perry Riley, versatile lineman Chris Baker and cornerback DeAngelo Hall.

“I think ‘Rak is, obviously, a priority [as well as] Perry,” Haslett said, speaking at the Senior Bowl. “And we’ve got some other guys on defense: Chris Baker did a good job [as did] D-Hall.”

Indeed, those four players had strong 2013 campaigns and could be foundation-type players going forward. Orakpo, 27, recorded a career-high 60 tackles (in 15 games) to go along with 10 sacks and an interception returned for a score. Riley, 25, led the team with 115 tackles and also recorded three sacks and an interception. Baker, 26, recorded a career-high 28 tackles, a sack and five stuffs. Hall, 30, had four interceptions, 13 passes defended and three forced fumbles as he bounced back in a big way.

Haslett’s comments, of course, don’t mean those players will be re-signed. It takes two parties to agree. But it certainly gave us a sense of his thought process.

“You’d like to have those guys back if you could,” he said.
