Gruden: At 3-13, Redskins have a lot of work to do

We don’t know who will be coordinating the Redskins’ defense. Jay Gruden refused to confirm or deny reports that Jim Haslett or possibly Raheem Morris would be the one to lead the defense.

He said that he will sit down and talk to each of the holdover assistant coaches and make his decisions after that. But whether or not Haslett and/or Morris remain, it seems likely that the 3-4 defense is here to stay.

“This team is built for the 3-4. They’ve been in the 3-4 for a while and I love the 3-4,” said Gruden when asked.

“I’m excited to have a chance to talk to all the [coaching] candidates [to] instill the 3-4 defense.”

The Redskins have had results that have ranged from mediocre to downright awful with the defensive scheme, which they have run since Mike Shanahan came aboard in 2010. In the four seasons running the 3-4 they have ranked 31st, 13th, 28th, and 18th in yards given up.

However, the performance of the unit may not be due to the alignment. Many analysts believe that the Redskins’ talent level on defense is not high enough for it to be one of the better defenses in the league regardless of what alignment they run.
