Brian Mitchell gets the inside scoop on Jay Gruden

Earlier Sunday, a report on Twitter suggested that the 49ers were miffed with the Redskins because Washington forgot to cancel interviews with San Francisco coordinators Greg Roman and Vic Fangio before announcing the hiring of Jay Gruden.

The report said Roman and Fangio had prepared to meet with the Redskins on Thursday—the same day Gruden was introduced as Washington's new head coach in Ashburn.

The Redskins, however, are disputing that report. According senior vice president Tony Wyllie, the team requested and was granted permission by the 49ers to speak to Roman and Fangio. But Wyllie was adamant that actual interviews were never scheduled.

“We requested and were granted permission but a date for the interviews was never scheduled,” Wyllie said. “So the report is wrong. There was nothing to cancel because nothing was scheduled.”

The original report was from ESPN’s Adam Schefter, who wrote on Twitter, “49ers not happy Greg Roman and Vic Fangio prepared for Redskins HC interviews Thursday and Wash never cancelled before hiring Jay Gruden.”

The 49ers face the Panthers in a playoff game in Charlotte on Sunday afternoon.
