For the second straight day, an off-the-radar candidate emerged in the Washington Redskins coaching search. And for the first time since Monday, another team hopped on the coaching carousel.

After interviewing Cowboys special teams coach Rich Bisaccia on Friday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reported that the Redskins had inquired about setting up an interview with Vanderbilt coach (and former Maryland assistant) James Franklin. His team finished its season with a 41-24 win over Houston in the BVVA Compass Bowl.

Franklin is an interesting candidate and, judging by some of the sideline shots during the game, quite an intense individual. But he has only one year of NFL coaching experience and he is very much a long shot.

Meanwhile, the Titans fired their coach Mike Munchak, apparently in disagreement over changes to the coaching staff. That brings the number of teams looking for head coaches back up to five.

—Contrary to previous reports, Jim Caldwell will interview with the Redskins this morning. It had been previously reported that he had talked to Bruce Allen last week. This will be his second known interview; he was in Detroit to talk to the Lions on Friday.

—There were reports that Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops was going to interview with the Browns for their head coaching job. He’s run the Sooners program, about as big-time as it gets in college football, since 1999 and he has one national title to his credit (2000). The Browns were supposedly intrigued by him because he’s a player’s coach who can dish out discipline when needed. The 53-year-old Stoops could be open to a move to the next level. Another report came out saying that there was now Browns-Stoops interview on tap. I’m sure that Bruce Allen has examined his resume (figuratively). Keep your ears open on this one.
