Chris Cooley on the appeal of Redskins coaching job

Since firing Mike Shanahan, the Redskins have done exactly what GM Bruce Allen said they would: The team has cast a wide net in its coaching search.

The Redskins have interviewed, or have requested to interview, at least 10 current NFL coordinators and one college coach. In the coming days, Redskins Insiders Tarik El-Bashir and Rich Tandler will give you the skinny on each of the candidates.

Who: Darrell Bevell, Seahawks offensive coordinator (2011-present).

Other NFL experience: Packers (offensive assistant 2000-02), Packers quarterbacks coach (2003-05), Vikings (offensive coordinator 2006-10).

Age: 44

Accomplishments: A four-year starting quarterback at Wisconsin, Bevell directed the Badgers to a 10-1-1 record and a Rose Bowl victory on Jan. 1, 1994. As the play caller in Seattle, the Seahawks have ranked third and fourth in rushing the past two seasons, respectively.

Notable Redskins connections: None.

Bottom line: Bevell has not been a head coach at any level but does know a thing or two about quarterbacks, which, of course, is a top priority for the Redskins. He was Brett Favre’s position coach in Green Bay and was Favre’s offensive coordinator and play-caller in Minnesota, helping the Vikings to a 12-4 record in 2009. Bevell’s work with Favre is notable. But it’s his work with Russell Wilson the past two seasons that’s made him a head coaching candidate. In 2012, the Seahawks signed Matt Flynn to starting quarterback money. Still, Bevell attended Wilson’s pro day at Wisconsin and the Seahawks drafted Wilson in the third round. The rest is history. Wilson beat out Flynn in training camp and Bevell has developed Wilson into one of the game’s most versatile and effective signal callers. Could Bevell do the same thing in Washington with Robert Griffin III? It’s a good bet that question came up when Redskins’ General Manager Bruce Allen met with Bevell last week in Seattle.
