The Redskins have re-signed linebacker Bryan Kehl to a one year contract, according to a source with knowledge of the move.

Kehl was a standout on special teams in 2012, recording six solo tackles and one assist in only five games, according to

In the preseason, Kehl was a standout for the Redskins, recording 16 tackles, two sacks and an interception in four games. But the 28-year-old got caught in a numbers crunched and was released in August.

After a brief stint with the Chiefs, the Redskins claimed Kehl off of waivers in November. He played exclusively on special teams down the stretch, but it’s possible he’ll also see time as a reserve on defense in 2013 after Washington lost linebacker and special teams ace Lorenzo Alexander in free agency on Wednesday.

In 67 career games Kehl has made five starts and recorded 116 tackles, a sack and an interception.
