Redskins vs. Buccaneers Live Updates: Week 4 score, stats, highlights

The Washington Redskins and Tampa Bay Buccaneers kick off Week 4 of the NFL preseason with a rainsoaked matchup on Wednesday, Aug. 31 at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa Bay.

The game was moved up a day early because of incliment weather and early updates indicate the game is still on, for now.

CSN Mid-Atlantic is providing live udpates from the Redskins vs. Buccaneers game with the latest scores, stats, highlights, weather updates and quarter-by-quarter summaries.

PREGAME:

5:30 p.m. — The official kickoff time is set for 8:00 p.m. The radar in Tampa Bay doesn't look to good just two hours out.

5:40 p.m. — Rookie quarterback Nate Sudfeld is getting the start for the Redskins tonight. Having played his college career in Big Ten country, 'a little rain' isn't a concern.

6:10 p.m. — Oh the joys of television ... and cannons. CSNMA Insider JP Finlay still has some things to get used to.

6:20 p.m. — The game is still on as planned, although the torrential downpour in Tampa could potentially force game officials to end the game at the half.

6:40 p.m. — The final preseason game is, for many teams, the final audition for fringe players. As such, 26 Redskins players did not make the trip to Tampa. Kirk Cousins, Jordan Reed, DeAngelo Hall, Trent Williams and Pierre Garcon are just few of the stars who will be watching the Buccaneers' game on TV.

7:20 p.m. — Weather update: THERE IS A LOT OF RAIN.

8:00 p.m. — OK, it's apparently time to play football, which may be a difficult task to carry out tonight. If you're in the neighborhood of Raymond James Stadium, there are plenty of seats still available.

FIRST QUARTER:

8:10 p.m. — The Redskins receive to start the game. Nate Sudfeld is in at QB. Robert Kelley starts at RB with Rashad Ross and Maurice Harris at WR. Logan Paulsen gets the start at TE.

8:15 p.m. — A healthy dose of Robert Kelley to start. He has been mighty impressive in the preseason. WIll he play another series? He probably shouldn't. A position on the roster is all but locked up. The Redskins rushing game looked fairly poor this preseason aside from Kelley.

8:17 p.m. — Redskins first drive stalls. Dustin Hopkins connects on a 47-yard FG. 3-0 Redskins.

SECOND QUARTER:

8:40 p.m. — Mack Brown wants a spot on the roster. The Florida Gators running back ran 60 yards for a TD on the first series of the second quarter. 10-0.

8:45 p.m. — Mack Brown doin' work.

8:50 p.m. — Conventional wisdom suggested that the Redskins running back position would work itself out by the end of the preseason. But as of now it looks like the team could keep Matt Jones, Chris Thompson, Rob Kelley and Mack Brown.

8:55 p.m. — Redskins force a turnover. Deshazor Everett deflected a pass from QB Ryan Griffin and Duke Ihenacho made the grab before the ball hit the ground.

9:05 p.m. — More from Mack Brown. Another big run has Brown at 130 yards on 12 carries.

9:10 p.m. — The fourth game of the preseason is importnat for a lot of reasons. It takes a few games for the catering staff to get on point, too.

9:20 p.m. — Mack Brown's dad made the trip and battled the elements to watch his son have a big first half. His reward? The touchdown ball.

FIRST HALF: REDSKINS 13, BUCCANEERS 0

Scoring drives:

First quarter

FG Hopkins 47

Drive: 10 plays, 46 yards, 5:36

Drive summary: This drive took place almost all on the ground. It was mostly Robert Kelley, who carries five times for 30 yards. But Mack Brown also kicked in two for 13 yards. It added up them getting close enough for Hopkins to split the uprights.

Redskins 3, Bucs 0

--------------------------------

Second quarter

Brown 60 run (Hopkins kick)

Drive: 2 plays, 57 yards, 0:58

Drive summary: This was Mack Brown’s show. He lost three yards on first down but on the next play he took the handoff, went off of left guard, broke a few tackles, and outran the defense to the end zone.

Redskins 10, Bucs 0

--------------------------------

Grant 38 pass from Cousins (Hopkins kick)

Drive: 6 plays, 18 yards, 2:22

Drive summary: The Redskins got a short field to work with when Deshazor Everett tipped a pass and Duke Ihenacho picked it off, returning it to the Bucs 18. Robert Kelly ran for six, six, and six yards but after two incomplete passes Hopkins came in for the short field goal.

Tropical storm pouring down rain in Tampa as game time approaches for Redskins (VIDEO)

TAMPA - It's no secret that bad weather is hitting Tampa this week. In fact, the Redskins and Buccaneers moved up their fourth and final preseason game from Thursday night to Wednesday night in an effort to get in front of the pending tropical weather. While the schedule change may help the teams avoid the nastiest parts of the storm, plenty of bad weather has already moved into Tampa.

From CSN photographer Mitch Tischler live at Raymond James Stadium:

A different view - looking over Tampa Bay:

As of 1 p.m., there are no plans in place to cancel the game, and some of the football operations people involved believe that the game will be fine as the bands of rain space out. Lightning and flooding could lead to a cancellation, however, either before the game or once the action stars.

Stay tuned.
