Your Wednesday morning open thread:

Right now, the roster includes two draft picks at running back – Jawan Jamison and Chris Thompson. The Redskins, of course, are in the market for a player to take some of the load off of Alfred Morris, and both rookies are expected to compete for a spot on the 53-man.

I have a tough time imagining a scenario where both Jamison and Thompson made the opening day roster, particularly if Coach Mike Shanahan keeps three tailbacks as he did last season.

Jamison (5-7, 203) is a one-cut and up-the-field back whose skill set seems to fit the Redskins’ offense well. He’s also a good receiver, having hauled in 28 passes for 323 yards and two touchdowns last season at Rutgers.

Thompson, meantime, is a burner and a pass-catching threat out of the backfield, potentially making the 5 foot 7, 192-pounder a weapon well suited for third down situations. (It should be noted that Thompson missed the entire offseason program while recovering from ACL surgery. He should be ready for camp.)

Jamison would appear to have a small edge now because he was on the field for rookie camp, OTAs and minicamp. But, as Mike Shanahan says, the two positions that can’t be evaluated properly without pads are running back and safety.

So who makes the cut? Both? Does one make the 53 and the other start on the practice squad?
