Ryan Kerrigan talks combine memories, new coaching staff

On Thursday the Redskins announced they reached a deal with free agent defensive lineman Chris Baker to keep him with the team. The deal, three years for $12 million with $4 million guaranteed, will keep the 6'2", 330 lbs. nose tackle/defensive end from Hampton, a player listed as a high priority by defensive coordinator Jim Haslett.

Baker is the type of homegrown talent the Redskins have seen leave over the last decade. He signed with Washington as an unrestricted free agent, working his way to a starter towards the end of last season. By all accounts, this is a positive move for the Redskins and Baker. Or at least RG3 thinks so.

But beyond Baker, what does the signing mean? Clearly the Skins front office is working on deals with their players, and very likely watching the rest of the NFL sandbox to see what other moves are being made and where potential players could be.

The Baker signing will not make a significant dent in Washington's cap space, but it does signify that a deal with the team's highest priority free agent Brian Orakpo is not imminent. Very little news has emerged on the Orakpo negotiations, regardless of the Baker deal. So what does it all mean? Should Redskins fans take the good news of the Baker signing in a vacuum, or wonder what else the front office is up to? Let us know what you think in the comments.
