The Redskins are promoting wide receiver Nick Williams from the practice squad to the active roster, a league source told Tarik El-Bashir of

It seems likely that Williams will get a shot at returning punts for the Redskins, who are dead last in the NFL in that category with an average of 6.1 yards. The rookie free agent out of Connecticut averaged 12.0 yards per punt return for the Huskies in 2012, taking two of them back for touchdowns. In one return during the preseason this year he took a punt back 29 yards.

Although it seems unlikely that Williams will get many snaps at wide receiver, he did tie for the team lead with seven receptions during the preseason.

In his press conference on Friday, Mike Shanahan indicated that the might try someone different at returner. “We’ll experiment with returners throughout the year until we get the guy that we want,” he said.

Williams takes the roster spot vacated when rookie running back Chris Thompson was put on injured reserve.
