The new deal the NFL cut to bring Thursday night football to CBS in the first half of the season will give the Redskins and every other team in the league a bump in their salary caps. But even though the deal takes effect this season, the cap increase will not come until 2015.
That’s because the salary cap is calculated as a percentage of revenues for the previous season. So additional dollars collected in 2014 will go into the cap formula and distributed during the 2015 season.
Pro Football Talk estimates that by the time everything is figured out the CBS deal will increase the cap by about $4 million per team, an increase of about three percent over this year’s estimated $127.5 million.
