The Redskins’ wide-ranging search for a new head coach continued to move forward this weekend.
On Saturday, General Manager Bruce Allen was expected to interview Panthers’ defensive coordinator Sean McDermott in Charlotte. And on Sunday, Allen is scheduled to interview Ravens offensive coordinator Jim Caldwell at Redskins Park, according to John Wooten of the Fritz Pollard Alliance, a diversity group that works in conjunction with the NFL and its teams.
Caldwell, 58, has spent the past two seasons in Baltimore. From 2009-2011, he was the head coach in Indianapolis, where he amassed a 26-22 record, including a pair of double-digit win seasons.
Caldwell interviewed with the Lions on Saturday and, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, watched film with quarterback Matthew Stafford and offered corrections on some of his passes. Rapoport also reported that the Lions are taking Caldwell’s candidacy “very seriously.”
Wooten, meantime, confirmed the Redskins remain interested in interviewing Giants defensive coordinator Perry Fewell. A meeting, however, had not been agreed upon as of Saturday afternoon because of scheduling complications on Fewell’s end, Wooten said.
Wooten added that his group has also recommended to the Redskins that they interview Bengals assistant Hue Jackson. The 48-year-old broke into the NFL as a position coach with the Redskins in 2001. Since then, he’s been an offensive coordinator in Washington, Atlanta and Oakland and was the Raiders’ head coach in 2011, posting an 8-8 record.
The Redskins have not scheduled an interview with Jackson, according to Wooten.
“We have said to them that they should look at Hue Jackson,” Wooten said in a phone interview Saturday. “At this point, they have not said they will or will not. So we don’t know.”
When Allen meets with Caldwell on Sunday, it will mark the fourth interview that has been made public. Seahawks offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell was interviewed last week in Seattle, Cowboys special teams coordinator Rich Bisaccia interviewed on Friday and McDermott was reportedly interviewed earlier Saturday.
