RG3: 'I would say I'm 100 percent'

Robert Griffin III is in football shape and has begun to look “automatic” in practice, Redskins Coach Mike Shanahan on Tuesday.

“He had a good practice yesterday and he had a good practice today,” Shanahan said. “I can see a big improvement from the start when we came out here the first day … to where he is now. You can see he’s in football shape. There hasn’t been a setback. Everything has been very positive.”

Shanahan added: Griffin “just feels more relaxed and can be put in more team situations. You can tell when someone has had enough reps where it starts to be automatic. You don’t have to push it.”

In an interviewed aired Tuesday on ESPN 980, Griffin said his knee is “100-percent” and that he could still run “a 4.3 something” in the 40-yard dash.

Asked if Griffin is, in his estimation, 100-percent, Shanahan was a little more elusive than his quarterback.

“You’re hoping he’s 100-percent,” Shanahan said. “The reason I’m a little iffy on that is I want judge him every day. But I have not seen a setback. He looks good. I’ve seen much improvement from the first day to where he is at now, just in his ability to move, his ability to scramble, just the ease with which he practices.”

The next major milestone in Griffin’s recovery comes Thursday in Tampa, where he’s scheduled to be examined by Dr. James Andrews. It’s expected that Andrews will recommend to the Redskins whether Griffin should (or should not) play Week 1 against the Eagles.

“Dr. Andrews is going to sit down and evaluate Robert,” Shanahan said,  “and give us his recommendation.”
