Shanahan on the legacy of London Fletcher

While announcing his likely retirement from the NFL, London Fletcher made a strong statement in support of embattled head coach Mike Shanahan.

“I think coach Shanahan is a great coach,” said Fletcher. “Any player who has played for him, most guys, I’d say 95 percent of the guys who played for him love playing for him.”

“As I look at the current situation I think Coach Shanahan is definitely the right guy. [Team owner Daniel] Snyder would be wise to let him see this thing through.”

Fletcher realizes that not all of the coaches will be able to stay on in light of the team’s dismal performance this year.

“Obviously, there’s going to have to be some changes made. Right now we’ve won three ball games,” he said. “There is change that needs to take place but I don’t think it has to be with the head coach.”

“I feel like he’s the right guy for it.”

Shanahan is the sixth head coach the Redskins have employed since Snyder bought team in 1999.

“There’s one thing that hasn’t happened around here in Washington since Mr. Snyder has owned this football team, there hasn’t been any stability at the head coach position,” said Fletcher.

Shanahan’s contract runs through the 2014 season. While acknowledging that his thinking might be outside of the mainstream, Fletcher said he should stay for longer.

“I think it would be hard for him to do it with just one year left on his deal,” he said. “Most people would be like, he’s a lame duck. I think they should extend him, as crazy as that may sound, extend him to let him continue to build this thing the right way.”

Of course with the Redskins at 3-11 this year and 24-37 in Shanahan's tenure, many wonder if the coach truly does have have things going in the right direction.
