Over the next few weeks, Insiders Tarik El-Bashir and Rich Tandler will take a position-by-position look at the Redskins’ depth chart.

Some battles are straightforward. Others could get complicated. This much, however, cannot be debated: A player is not on the 53-man roster until its finalized Aug 31.

So who’s in? And who’s in jeopardy? Up today …

Position: Right guard

On the roster: Chris Chester, Adam Gettis

Likely to make the 53: Chester

Comment: The Redskins have run 2,165 offensive plays in the past two seasons and Chris Chester has been the right guard for every single one of them. Like the other two starters along the interior line, left guard Kory Lichtensteiger and center Will Montgomery, he is not considered to be one of the top players in the at his position. But the Redskins are more than happy to have them.

Chester has given up just one sack in each of the last two seasons and after struggling to adjust to run blocking in the Redskins’ zone scheme for much of 2011 he has found his stride there.

Battling for a job: Gettis

Comment: The team kept Gettis on the 53-man roster and the game-day inactive list for all 16 games last year, essentially giving their 2012 fifth-round draft choice a redshirt NFL season. They like his athleticism and they believe that he has potential.

The team may be willing to give Gettis a second redshirt but they have to show that the first one was worth the investment of the time, money, and roster spot. If he shows progress in training camp and in what likely will be extensive action in the preseason he’ll get another year. If he looks like he is as much of a project as he was last year, he cold be on the roster bubble.
